Position Summary Information

Job Summary

The Veterinary Technician Assistant lends support to the veterinary technicians in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH). Typical duties will include cleaning and stocking of the VMTH, restraint of patients (multiple species) for procedures, cleaning and disinfection of cages, stalls and other equipment, and other duties as assigned. Under the supervision of Veterinary Technician I’s or higher, this position may perform patient care duties including hot and cold packing, feeding, physical exercise, and other duties as needed. The faculty of the Equine Sports Medicine & Imaging Service is dedicated to the successful performance and quality of life of the horse.

Required Education and Experience

High school diploma, GED or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Two years experience in animal care.

Preferred Education and Experience

Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA)or experience in animal handling and animal care.

Required Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations

Valid driver’s license; Must be able to obtain State of Texas Class “C” driver’s license within 30 days of employment.

Required Special Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

Basic computer skills, ability to work well with others in a teaching institute. No inhibiting allergies to animals, hay, dust or disinfectants, ability to lift heavy loads. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Experience with large animal handling and restraint.

Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor. Detailed Job Duties

Duties Performed

Performs other duties as assigned.

Duties Performed

Under the supervision of a Vet Tech I or higher, provides patient restraint for medical procedures. Feeds and walks patients per clinician’s orders. Obtains and stocks supplies from storage room and pharmacy. Observes and reports behavior problems or conditions that develop with animals while under our care to appropriate medical staff verbally and in writing with use of computer and the Veterinary Medical Information System. Assists with lameness exams. Performs basic sample analysis. Provides support to other services within the VMTH. Assists with anesthesia induction and recovery for equine patients. Assists with transporting equine patients to the MRI and CT imaging suites. Assists with proper positioning of equine patients for MRI and CT imaging. Assists with patient transport and proper restraint for professional veterinary student teaching laboratories.

Duties Performed

Maintains a sanitary and well organized service within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Performs recording keeping. Restocks expendable supplies, drugs, and solutions. Cleans and disinfects treatment rooms. Cleans floors, walls, sinks, and cabinets.

Operates forklift, Field Service trucks and other equipment as directed. Maintains and services equipment.

Assists faculty and students with patient care. Keeps patients cleaned and groomed. Administers and monitors patient diet as prescribed. Performs or assists with collection of patient’s blood, urine, and tissues. Exercises patients- Frequently jogs horses by lead rope on lameness pad for clinician and student evaluation. Restrains horses. Assists with diagnostic Lameness procedures. Assists with treatments.
