Position Summary Information

Job Summary

The Information Technology (IT) Generalist II, under general supervision, assists with routine technical support for various IT projects or work groups. Assists with routine technical support to customer.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree or any equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. One year of job-related experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

Experience with Help/Service Desk support functions. Experience supporting PC and Macintosh computers. Familiarity with office applications.

Required Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations

Ability to obtain passport and international visas on a continuing basis.

Required Special Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

Must be able to work in a collaborative team environment. Excellent communication (both oral and written) and interpersonal skills. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Excellent customer service skills.

Experience working in an academic research-oriented atmosphere. Experience with scientific ocean drilling. Knowledge of oceanographic sciences.

This position may be required to sail. Seagoing employees must pass a new employee physical exam and annual physical exam.

Detailed Job Duties

Duties Performed

Conducts operating systems installation and maintenance; Provides LAN, microcomputer, or other technology equipment installation, repair, troubleshooting, maintenance and/or support; Conducts customer consultation in the use and development of technological tools and/or multimedia development; Provides routine technical support for the customer; Meets with customers and technical staff to determine information needs and requirements; and Provides on-call support on nights and weekends as needed.

Duties Performed

Monitors and maintains system security; Provides resource estimates and progress reports; Ensures that all work is accurate and in compliance with departmental or project quality standards; Learns about other areas of a complex computing and/or networking environment; Participates in training and professional development sessions; Serves on committees to develop technical standards and direction; and Researches problems and recommends solutions.

Duties Performed

May sail occasionally on the JOIDES Resolution research vessel as a staff member to provide technical assistance and desktop computer support for a heterogeneous network and computing environment; and The duties of this position involve fine motor skills for delicate tasks and strenuous physical activity, including moving, lifting, and carrying heavy loads; reaching, bending, and maintaining balance on a moving ship; working under confined conditions on the ship; exposure to noise, vibration, and potential allergens; and occasional exposure to extreme environments.
