Position Summary Information

Job Summary

This Library Specialist I is responsible for providing basic reference assistance, front desk coverage, monitoring and enforcing policies for the Reading Room at Cushing Memorial Library and Archive. Assists with completing duplication requests. Performs opening and closing procedures for second floor.

Required Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience. One year of related library experience.

Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Ability to move medium weight boxes, books, heavy book truck or similar items. Ability to handle material which can contain dust or microscopic mold spores. Keyboarding skills. Familiarity of email, word processing and internet searches. Good interpersonal skills. Reliable attendance. Excellent communication and customer service skills.

Preferred Special Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

Knowledge of additional language(s). Familiarity with methods of humanities research.

Detailed Job Duties

Duties Performed

Assists with completing duplication requests. Transfers Cushing materials to the Digitization unit and back to Cushing. Assists in completing CORS requests. Assists in maintaining security of the Reading Room. Assists in ensuring the security and preservation of Cushing Library materials. Ensures the safety of patrons and maintains an organized and welcoming environment. Provides detailed information on general library services. Orients users to and enforces Cushing Library policies and procedures (e.g. no food and drink; scanning policy; proper handling of materials; pens, etc.). Assists patrons of all genders, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity and backgrounds.

Duties Performed

Provides basic front desk and reference assistance to library users. Able to interview a patron to determine what types of materials in our collection would best fill their needs. Refers questions to University Archivist and other Curators, when necessary. Pulls materials for patrons. Re-shelves as needed. Answers in-person, e-mail, phone, and mail reference questions. Uses knowledge of the library’s automated cataloging system, and the library’s archival system to complete request.

Provides general assistance to library personnel. Performs opening and closing procedures for second floor. Works with other staff to determine projects that would be beneficial to the library. Contributes to unit by working effectively with individuals of diverse background
