Position Summary Information

Job Summary

The Financial Specialist I – Payroll is responsible for providing clerical, accounting, and customer service support duties in a specialized field within the Division of Finance. The responsibility of this position is to contribute to the team by working effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds to ensure that all payroll information received from campus departments is processed in a timely and accurate manner; that the duties and functions as assigned are performed to ensure that TAMU employees are paid in a timely and accurate manner in accordance with rules and regulations.

Required Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience. Four years of financial or accounting experience related to payroll, purchasing, or fiscal transactions.

Preferred Education and Experience

Business course at a college level. Previous Texas A&M University experience in Payroll, Accounts Payable or other general business office experience. Higher education experience

Required Special Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

Excellent oral and written communication, customer service and problem-solving skills. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Attention to detail. Ability to comprehend, apply and enforce rules and regulations. Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet programs and bookkeeping procedures.

Preferred Special Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

Working knowledge of MS Access, LeaveTraq, TimeTraq and the TAMUS Budget, Payroll & Personnel system. Working knowledge and ability to use MS Word and Excel.

Must be able to work overtime during peak periods.

Detailed Job Duties

Duties Performed

Contributes to assigned team by working effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds to maintain the Personnel and Active Payroll Budget database based on documents and information received from agencies, employees and campus payroll administrators. Researches discrepancies discovered in payroll documents submitted. Train Payroll Processors as needed.

Duties Performed

Entry and approval of time and effort information for monthly and biweekly paid employees. Reviews data for accuracy and compliance with all applicable rules and regulation.

Review for accuracy, completeness and compliance and data entry of extra payments, allowances and employee deductions.

Provides assistance to departmental payroll administrators as required.

Assists other teams to review, research and process payroll data.

Applies and enforces TAMU, State, and Federal rules and regulations.

Duties Performed

Reviews, updates and creates processes and procedures for the payroll processing desk manual. Assists with the document imaging system through prepping and retrieving documents. Assists tax section, distribution and imaging with questions related to employee payments. Performs other duties as assigned.
