We’re looking for a programmer with a solid systems background. The primary duties will involve writing code to improve and manage the animation rendering pipeline used in the Visualization Department (and throughout the college). This service provides animation and rendering services through industry-standard software packages and leveraging local computing and storage infrastructure. There will also be elements of systems automation, database management, and Linux systems configuration as well. If you have the programming skills, and want to learn about systems management and automation, or if you have a strong systems background and are interested in learning to write code to manage and automate those systems, you should apply for this job. Position Summary Information

Job Summary

The IT Professional I, under general supervision, meets the IT needs of a unit where multifaceted expertise is required. Performs in specialty areas of systems, services, applications, and/or database management. Performs unit-level support in multiple technical fields.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Two years of experience in database management, support of computer operations infrastructure & automation and/or LINUX systems administration.

Must be able to work in a collaborative team environment. Strong interpersonal communication skills. Knowledge and experience with managing modern computer systems and operating systems. Experience with modern scripting languages, and systems automation. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Special Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

Experience with Python, Ruby, or bash scripting. Experience with UNIX-like operating systems (such as Linux), and tools and programs to automate UNIX deployment and configuration management.

Detailed Job Duties

Duties Performed

Programming with a strong systems component. Designs, builds, and maintains pipeline tools (glue code written mainly in Python and shell) that provide an overall animation rendering service to students and faculty in the college; these programs enable access to rendering services from within industry-standard software packages on college workstations, and interact with other college infrastructure, such as identity management services, storage systems, and databases. Manage a team of student developers who contribute to these programs using modern, industry-standard collaboration models (GitHub, DevOps, etc). Design, build, and maintain web applications in a team environment to support these services.

Duties Performed

Develops, tests, maintains, and modifies programs to assist with the operations infrastructure and automation; contributes to and participates in open-source projects focused on devops support and management (chef, puppet, munki, etc); publishes changes and original work back to the open-source community when appropriate; assists fellow operations staff in the development of automated management tools on alternate systems (Windows).

Duties Performed

Installs, maintains, and manages the college database service for use by the development team; researches, recommends, and implements changes to the database system in order to maintain highest availability and reliability of the data; researches, recommends and implements changes to the web database system in order to optimize performance and reliability of the sites; researches, recommends, and implements disaster recovery and site reliability features appropriate for the college database systems.

One-time or periodically planned tasks which require specialized attention (potentially up to 100% time for several days); working with other IT support staff in an advisory capacity to create new applications; testing of new applications and program deployments; evaluating new software for internal IT support use in managing, maintaining, deploying, and servicing infrastructure.

Provides working stable Linux environment to development teams using DevOps methods; conducts linux server installation and maintenance; coordinates closely with development team; monitors servers and storage health; integrates systems automation tools (like puppet, chef or fabric) and other devops tools into existing environment; conducts standard systems administration tasks for Linux environment; manages overall logging efforts for the college infrastructure (Linux, Windows, other) and monitors log traffic for analysis; develops and manages storage solutions for supporting college infrastructure.
