Position Summary Information

Job Summary

The Library Specialist II, under general supervision, provides general customer service and standard or routine library functions related to various specialized disciplines. Performs standard library functions in one or more library units. Under supervision, learns intermediate and more advanced library functions.

Required Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Three years of related library experience.

Knowledge of word processing, and spreadsheet applications.

Knowledge of email and library online research databases.

Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Basic keyboarding skills.

Ability to lift moderately heavy objects.

Ability to exert heavy force.

Ability to handle material containing dust or microscopic mold spores.

Detailed Job Duties

Duties Performed

Processes library material and routine information for customers. Catalogs library materials using the On-line Computer Library Center (OCLC) system and maintains/updates records and items when errors are discovered.

Creates and exports item records and spine labels within the integrated system. Assigns item call numbers using the Library of Congress Classification system. Formats labels using the OCLC label program, and attaches to the resources themselves.

Processes resources that come in a series and/or are regularly updated and withdraws obsolete serials from the collection when a replacement is received.

Performs data validation and completion of appropriate forms.
Maintains and updates records and/or items when errors are discovered.

Participates in library wide events, including Library Week, or special projects such as removal of old barcodes for new ones.

Assists in reading and maintaining shelves by visually checking the classification order for correct sequence and places materials in proper locations.

Performs some cash handling.

May supervise subordinate staff and student employees.

Attends meetings and serve on committees related to the library.

Assists in other areas of library operations when needed.

May perform some or all duties of a Library Specialist I.

Provides routine customer service in one or more library areas.

Cooperates as a team member with the library staff in performing any professional or nonprofessional duties essential to the achievement of efficient library operations.
