Position Summary Information

Job Summary

Under general direction, provides oversight to faculty, staff, and students in the areas of Reference, Interlibrary Loans, and Bibliographic Instruction, and guides the development of supervised personnel.

Required Education and Experience

Master’s degree in Library Science or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Two years of related experience in an academic library setting.

Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.

Knowledge of automated library systems.

Knowledge of basic metadata schemas, digital collection management software, security, and public safety issues.

Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Excellent interpersonal, customer service, presentation, and research skills.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to use basic print and electronic reference tools.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.

Preferred Education and Experience

Three years reference experience.

Experience in bibliographic instruction.

Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office.

Experience with speaking to groups.

Detailed Job Duties

Duties Performed

Plans, coordinates, and administers User Services.

Supports ongoing training of Library staff for effective user service and compliance with standards established for Library customer service.

Promotes interaction between academic programs and Library services and resources.

Serves as liaison Librarian to one academic department and provides information and collection development services, including informing faculty of new library services and resources, serving as an intermediary for departmental library issues, monitoring approval plans, and recommending titles for purchases.

Directs the provisions of specialized and general reference and instruction services to students, faculty, and other patrons via online and print venues and resources.

Develops reference resources.

Makes purchase and budget recommendations for reference materials.

Interprets and clarifies class assignments and individual queries, often requiring contact with faculty, and directs users to appropriate library sources, in all formats. Assists students and faculty in achieving their research goals.

Facilitates the use of all library resources, including EAGLIT (on-line catalog), CD-ROM databases, print and non-print indexes, abstracts, reference materials, and on-line and Internet sources.

Provide reference desk assistance to library users. Also provides back-up assistance to service desk including personal assistance to individual users.

Answers telephone, email, and virtual reference questions, often providing fast-fact answers immediately.

Refers to sources, places, and individuals’ off-campus when local sources are insufficient.

Participates in library orientation and bibliographic instruction program which often includes detailed explanations and demonstrations of various search engines for different electronic products. Coordinates the bibliographic instruction programs with other staff members.

Compiles bibliographies to complement specific class assignments. Often works with faculty members to enhance and design library assignments. Participates in providing programs and finding aids to complement library instruction.

Serves as a member of the Library Sub-Committee and assists in library planning. Serves on other library and university committees as appointed.

Maintains professional expertise appropriate to meet service and planning requirements in assigned areas.

Helps plan, promote and carry out effective communications with the faculty and students about library services. Plans, publicizes, promotes library training courses and schedules and solicit attendance to ensure participation.

Performs the daily tasks of the Interlibrary Loan/Borrowing Department.

Helps plan and carry out a coordinated plan for the selection and weeding of library materials.

Responsible for acquisition of materials and coordinating collection development of resources for A&M-Texarkana. Supervises the checking of bibliographies and other publication sources relevant to collection development responsibilities.

Responsible for monitoring of Reference shelving to ensure that the collection is properly maintained.

Cooperate as a team member with library staff in performing any professional or non-professional duties essential to the achievement of efficient library operations.
