Position Summary Information

Job Summary

The Veterinary Anesthesia Technician I, under the supervision a senior staff member or clinician, provides clinical support to veterinarians in the delivery and instruction of primary patient care and anesthesia services.

Required Education and Experience

Associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Two years of technical experience in veterinary medicine, anesthesia, or related field.

Preferred Education and Experience

Associates or Bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science, or a related area. Specialty training in anesthesia or related area.

Required Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations

None.

Preferred Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations

Certification as a Licensed Veterinary Technician, Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) in Academy of Veterinary Technician Anesthetist (AVTA), or Academy of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Technicians (AVECCT), A.S. or B.S preferred.

Required Special Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

Basic computer skills in word processing, spread sheets, and billing entry required. Working knowledge of veterinary equipment used within a veterinary teaching hospital such as anesthetic machines, fluid pumps, blood gas analyzers, oscilloscopes, defibrillators, nebulizers, and equipment preferred. Strong animal handling skills. General understanding of equipment used in a veterinary medical teaching hospital preferred. Ability to perform heavy lifting. Ability to communicate effectively and positively at all levels within the anesthesia service and the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Strong computer background and animal handling skills preferred. Must be able to work within time constraints and in crisis situations. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor. Requires working different shifts and participating in On-Call coverage. Participates in emergency duty coverage during veterinary student absences and for holidays. May be required to work alternate shifts, some overtime, holidays, weekends, or “on-call duty.”

Detailed Job Duties

Duties Performed

Assists faculty, residents, interns, and students with patient care: Assists with the instruction of professional curriculum to veterinary medical students with an emphasis on instruction of clinical techniques. Assists students in designing anesthetic protocols. Records or assists veterinary students in recording patient medical information. Assists students in inducing and maintaining anesthesia in a variety of animal species. Assists with instruction of students in venous and arterial catheterization, endotracheal intubation, and the administration of pre-medicants, induction agents, inhalant anesthetics and appropriate analgesics. Assists students and/or staff in preparing patients for surgical procedures to include intubations, proper clipping and aseptic surgical site preparation. Assists students in monitoring anesthetized patients. Assists students in proper anesthesia recovery techniques. Assists with critical and intensive nursing care or life sustaining emergency care as needed. Provides physical restraint for safe handling of multiple species of patient animals. Restrains aggressive animals under the guidance of a Veterinary Technician II or higher. Participates in active research projects.

Duties Performed

Instructs and assists students in maintaining accurate and complete patient anesthesia and medical records. Ensures that all charges generated from Anesthesia Services are captured and correctly entered into the hospital information system (VMIS). Ensures that all controlled substances used in the Anesthesia Service are properly documented and accounted for. Assists with organizing and maintaining the Anesthesia Service scheduling system. Reviews anesthetic records and pharmacy slips for accuracy and completeness. Records or assists students in recording the patient’s physiological data and all medications given on Anesthesia records.

Participates in primary and back-up emergency Anesthesia call in the large animal hospitals on a regular basis.

Ensures that the proper equipment is available to facilitate patient safety as instructed. Assists with maintenance and operation of point of care laboratory equipment, monitors and ventilators. Assists with maintenance and operation of patient monitoring equipment. Arranges for Anesthesia Service equipment maintenance when necessary.

Assists with maintaining a sanitary and well-organized service area. Restocks supplies, drugs, and solutions. Assists with cleaning and repackages items for sterilization specific to the service area. Orders Anesthesia supplies and keep supply logs.

Remains current with safety classes, rabies prophylaxis, and Licensure: Radiation/MRI safety; Infection Control; Aseptic Technique; Rabies prophylaxis; Maintain certification or licensure where appropriate; Demonstrates the basic skills of a Veterinary Anesthesia Technician I.
