Position Summary Information

Job Summary

The Director is responsible for the daily administration of research activities at TAMUG, including: 1) key contact for Sponsored Research Services, other agencies and TAMU research related offices – incumbent must be able to provide responses or request information, sign proposals as University representative in Vice President’s absence; 2) assist TAMUG researchers with all aspects of pre-and post award management; 3) facilitate interactions between researchers and fiscal staff; 4) maintain smooth and efficient operation of the Research Office.


Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Biology, Marine Science, Maritime Administration or equivalent combination of education and experience. Ten years’ of management or administrative experience in a university environment, including supervision and a minimum of five years of research program management, including accounting and budgeting for grants and contracts.

Preferred Education and Experience

Masters or PhD in marine or maritime related discipline, 10 years’ experience in research program management; accounting and budgeting of Grants and Contracts. Experience with compliance related matters. Experience with compliance and post award management (cost sharing, indirect).

Advanced computer skills in word processing and spreadsheets, knowledge of Grants & Contracts Program Management. Customer friendly and good rapport with researchers. Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, high ethical standards and a commitment to excellence. Ability to work well under deadlines. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Detailed Job Duties

Duties Performed

Coordinates cost share reporting and accounting for Galveston research activities. Prepares government mandated reports for research activities. Prepares indirect cost entries and assists in indirect allocation preparation and reporting. Has signature authority on purchase orders, requisitions, fiscal requests and other fiscal forms related to Research. Supports the AVP RGSO in managing financial accounts. Prepares research fiscal reports according to documented requirements, ensuring accuracy and timeliness. Monitors financial activity to ensure that Research and Graduate Studies accounts are financially sound and are used in accordance with established mandates and guidelines. Provides assistance to the AVP of Academic Affairs in preparation of required documentation, and implementation of operating budgets for all Research & Graduate Studies accounts. Provides administrative support for Research Advisory Council, Council of Principle Investigators and several other groups.

Duties Performed

Serves as the Campus Research Compliance Officer (Ethics, FCOI, Nepotism, AUP, Export Controls, etc.). Supervises maintenance of
proposals and contracts databases and preparation of reports. Assists researchers in pre-award aspects of project management. Provides Final review and approval of research proposals ensuring budget, compliance, cost-share, etc., have been reviewed and concerns addressed.
Reviews and approves Interim Funding Requests.

Duties Performed

Interfaces with Texas A&M Research Sponsored Research Services, TAES, TEES, TEEX, TWRI, OSP, etc. on Galveston research activities and the Contract & Grants Office for all TAMUG contracts. Liaises with external community and TAMU-Galveston & College Station faculty and staff on research pre- and post-award management issues.
