Position Summary Information

Job Summary

The Research Scientist (IODP Title: Manager, Technical & Analytical Services) will be responsible for the efficient and effective operation of IODP’s Technical and Analytical Services Division. Responsible for the supervision and management of the Technical and Analytical Services employees.

Major/Essential Duties of Job

Leadership & Management
-Responsible for development and implementation of departmental goals, objectives, and long range planning in support of the science deliverables.
-Provide administrative and financial management including development and execution of departmental budgets, annual program plan, quarterly spending plan, and supporting cost documentation.
-Ensure completion of department deliverables within schedule, scope of work, and approved resources.
-Contribute to expedition project management development and ongoing implementation. Contribute to a post expedition assessment documenting success and failures along with recommendations for improvements.
-Interface with cooperative partners and stakeholders to ensure continuity and cross platform technology collaboration, efficiency, and effectiveness.
Technical & Analytical Services:
-Integrate the service delivery for the technical and analytical services staff to create seamless interactions with the science customers.
-Responsible for ensuring implementation of adequate shipboard and scientific instrumentation and systems integration, including data acquisition, data QA/QC, and transfer of data to the IT and database groups.
-Ensure maintenance, operability, and documentation of shipboard and shore-based laboratories and shore-based service centers.

-Ensure maintenance, operability, and documentation of shipboard and shore-based laboratories and shore-based service centers.
-Prioritize improvements to analytical hardware and software.
-Ensures departmental compliance with all Health, Safety, and Environment rules and regulations.
-Responsible for adherence to Federal, State, University and program policies.

Occasional Duties

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Appropriate PhD and 6 years’ relevant professional experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

PhD in field of geology or oceanography or in Earth Sciences. Ten years in large project management, leading and managing large integrated projects with overall responsibility for scope, cost, and schedule. Ten years experience in the application of Earth Sciences and/or Scientific analysis related to Scientific Ocean Drilling.

Project Management certification.

Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Proven ability to motivate and lead a diverse group of individuals. Strong interpersonal skills. Must have excellent oral and written communication experience. Demonstrable skills interacting with individuals who may have differing levels of technical understanding and experience. Exceptional leadership and organizational skills. Proven ability with standard office software (e.g., email, Word, Excel, and project management software). Experience with risk management and HSE. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Ability to obtain passport and international travel visas on a continuing basis.
