Position Summary Information

Job Summary

The International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) at Texas A&M University invites applications for the position of Program Aide with the Technical and Analytical Department (TAS). This position will require up to two (2) months at sea during Expedition 371 (Tasman Frontier Subduction and Climate) on the research vessel JOIDES Resolution, which operates worldwide on two-month scientific drilling expeditions. This position performs the responsibilities of a marine technician aboard the research ship.

Major/Essential Duties of Job

Under the direction of staff members, process and handle cores and take samples as they are received on the core platform. Label and scribe cores and enter scientific data into the IODP science database. Split, box, move, and store cores. Keep core lab and/or assigned lab clean. Practice and promote safety in core handling.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field.

Preferred Education and Experience

Science or engineering degree. Prior seagoing experience. Basic familiarity with laboratory techniques and laboratory safety.

Ability to obtain passport and international travel visas.

Required Special Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

Working knowledge of standard computer and software applications. Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills. Must be detail oriented and have the ability to successfully organize tasks, multi-task, and prioritize work. Demonstrated ability to work professionally, harmoniously, and cooperatively with others. Be able to work independently.

Preferred Special Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

Experience with scientific ocean drilling. Background in the oceanographic sciences.

Other Requirements or Other Factors

This position will sail a two-month expedition on the research vessel working 12 hours per day, 7 days per week. The position requires moving cores on a moving ship and working in an environment with exposure to noise, dust, and potential allergens. Seagoing employees must pass a new employee physical exam.
