Position Summary Information

Job Summary

A Research Assistant position is available in the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology in the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences at Texas A&M University. The successful candidate will join a research lab aimed at understanding the genetic and epigenetic basis of disease in humans and animals, with a particular emphasis on neurogenetic disorders. The research environment involves many disciplines including genetics, genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and molecular & cell biology. Research in the laboratory also involves the use of several in vitro and in vivo model systems.

Major/Essential Duties of Job

Perform cell culture and prepare media, reagents, buffers, etc; isolate DNA and RNA from cell cultures and tissues; perform PCR, quantitative PCR, western blot analysis, ELISA, etc.; carry out general housekeeping of the laboratory and laboratory equipment; maintain laboratory inventory, records, and procedural manuals; ensure compliance and assist with submitting compliance documents; assist in collection, recording and maintaining experimental/research data; work closely with investigator to design and interpret experimental studies and assist with advising trainees in the lab.

Required Education and Experience

Candidates must have a B.S. in biology, biomedical sciences, genetics, neuroscience or related fields or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Candidates with higher degrees (M.S. and/or PhD) are also encouraged to apply.

Candidates should have a demonstrated track record of organizational, written, and oral communication skills. The successful candidate must work independently and as an effective member of a multidisciplinary collaborative team and have excellent interpersonal skills with students, other lab personnel, and the public. The candidate must be proficient at basic computer skills and database management and must have a valid U.S. driver’s license.

Preferred Special Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

Preference will be given to candidates with experience handling transgenic mouse models and working in a molecular biology and/or genetic laboratory.
